Student Population

The Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) has a total student population of approximately 90 students. The students are enrolled in one of three degree programs,Ph.D., M.S., or M.O. (Masters of Oceanography).

GSO was established in 1961as a new academic college within the university (built upon the foundation of the University's Naragansett Marine Laboratory, established in 1935). GSO has conferred 364 masters degrees and 405doctoral degrees through August 2002 to a total of 754 individuals.

Student Research

Students pursuing Ph.D. and M.S degrees conduct significant original research projects as part of their degree requirements. Students may undertake research in any area of oceanography or marine science. A list of the students and their research topics shows scope of research activities underway at GSO.

Student Seminars

All GSO students are required to be enrolled in OCG 695, Seminar in Oceanography. Students beyond the first year of enrollment are required to present a seminar or poster each year on their research. A list of past OCG 695 seminars and abstracts may be found on the Student Seminars page. GSO Calendar of Seminars and Events provides an up-to-date listing of student seminars. Administrative matters for OCG 695 (instructions, templates, & on-line comments) may be found on the non-public GSO internal web site.

The Chowder and Marching Society

The Chowder and Marching Society (C&M) is a student organization at the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO) whose major objective is to address GSO students' changing professional, academic, and social needs and concerns. The C&M web pages provide links to many useful information sources for GSO students.

The annual GSO boat burning began as a waterfront cleanup and continues as the core of annual festivity at the start of each new academic year.
